William R. Dickinson

William Richard Dickinson (born 26 October 1931 in Tennessee) is an American geologist. He is Professor Emeritus of Earth Sciences at the University of Arizona.

Dickinson is known for his work on plate tectonics, the sedimentary geology and the geology of Oceania. He is considered the expert on the geology of the Colorado Plateau.

Dickinson's research includes in addition to geological issues and the study of historical and prehistoric pottery shards Oceania. Over the years, he has hundreds of islands in the Pacific and visited there potsherds collected for radiometric dating.

He lives in Tucson, Arizona and teaches at the University of Arizona, while he pursued his research.

Dickinson is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and in 1994 was president of the Geological Society of America.
