William Rockefeller

William Rockefeller ( May 31, 1841 *, † June 24, 1922 ) was one of the most successful American business magnate.

Life

Since 1866, William was business partner of his brother John D. Rockefeller, whom he had previously supported build his Standard Oil empire. When the company was founded by Standard Oil in 1870, he owned 13% of the company. Since he sold part of its shares in the following years and did not participate in capital increases, its share declined over time to 4%.

From 1882 to 1891 led William Rockefeller Standard Oil of NY ( Socony ), developed based on in the result, the Group Mobil Oil.

After 1911, when the Standard Oil Trust was forcibly dissolved, William Rockefeller withdrew from the line positions in the companies back, and sold most of his interests to John D. Rockefeller. His profits he invested in real estate, real estate and railroads.

Another focus of his business activities had William Rockefeller in the National City Bank, in which he was involved. He controlled the bank together with the family Stillman. Later today Citibank developed from the National City Bank.

In addition, William Rockefeller is considered one of the founders of the American metal giants Amalgamated Copper.

Overall, William Rockefeller sat on the board of 35 companies.

According to the American Heritage Magazine / Forbes Magazine 1998 William Rockefeller was the 38th richest Americans of all time.
