William Sandell

William Martin Sandell ( born August 9, 1950 in Los Angeles, California, United States) is an American art director.

Life and work

Sandell had in various artistic fields - as a prop man and Szenenbildnerassistent - working on before he worked as a designer of movie scenes from the mid- 1970s. For several years he had to content themselves with orders for B- productions, only with the commercial success of the Brat Pack - cult film St. Elmo 's Fire, he managed to climb to the highly commercial multi- million dollar Hollywood cinema.

Sandells best designs are characterized by a high degree of ingenuity and diversity of forms from: for Valkenvania he created a scrap landscape including Spukgebäude, for Paul Verhoeven's sci-fi film Total Recall, he created a clear through-composed future scenery, and for the witches movie Hocus Pocus served Sandell in fundus of the storybook fantasies. In The Flintstones William Sandell was revived in 1993 plastic colorful cartoon dwellings, while he was rebuild in Wolfgang Petersen's Air Force One Flugzugthriller 1996 at a ratio of 1:1 of the same name, American president's plane. With Petersen Sandell worked a total of four times.

His sailing ship replica in the adventure film Master and Commander - The Far Side of the World Sandell 2004 brought an Oscar nomination.
