William Scott (artist)

William Scott ( * February 15, 1913 in Greenock / Strathclyde, Scotland, † December 28, 1989 in Bath, England) was a Scottish painter. He worked as a painter in France, England, Scotland and Italy.

Life

William Scott was of Irish- Scottish descent. He spent his childhood in Scotland ( in the home of his Scottish mother ), and from 1924 in Enniskillen ( County Fermanagh ) in Ireland ( in the home of his Irish father ). His father, who himself worked as a painter and graphic artist left, William to teach at age 14 in Enniskillen by an art teacher. This brought him close in particular the art of Paul Cézanne, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso and André Derain, which picturesque Williams 's early work had a strong influence.

From 1928 to 1931 Scott studied at the Belfast College of Art and in the years 1931-1935 at the Royal Academy Schools in London ( there in the sculpture class). In 1933 he was awarded the " Silver Medal for Sculpture ". Scott himself was from 1941 to 1956 taught at the Bath Academy of Art in 1936, he worked for six months near Penzance in Cornwall.

In the years 1937-1938 Scott lived for six months in Italy and visited Florence, Venice and Rome.

1945 Scott painted many still life. From 1952 to 1954 his works belong to the abstract painting.

1953, Scott took a study trip to the U.S. and there was contact with the artists Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Franz Kline. Scott's works took after these artistic contacts a special and individual position between figuration and abstraction.

William Scott's art has reached international attention and recognition. He took part in documenta 1 (1955), Documenta II (1959) and the documenta III in Kassel in 1964.

In 1975, Scott became an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art, London, 1976, he received an Honorary Doctorate in Literature from Queen's University Belfast. In 1977 he was also awarded the honorary doctorate in literature from Trinity College in Dublin.

In 1984 he was appointed a member of the Royal Academy.

William Scott died on 28 December 1989 at the age of 76 years in Bath.
