William Smith (Maryland)

William Smith ( * April 12, 1728 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, † March 27, 1814 in Baltimore, Maryland ) was an American politician. Between 1789 and 1791 he represented the state of Maryland in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

William Smith grew up during the British colonial period. Since 1761 he lived in Baltimore. In the early 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. In 1775 he was a member of the Committee on Observation; In 1777 he was a member of the Assembly to set up a Marine Committee. In the same year he was a delegate to the Continental Congress. Professionally, Smith was at that time engaged in trade. End of the 1780s he was in opposition to future President George Washington ( Anti- Administration Group ).

In the congressional elections of 1789 Smith was chosen in the fourth electoral district of Maryland in the time which meets even in New York U.S. House of Representatives, where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1789. Until March 3, 1791, he was able to complete the first term in Congress. Between July and September 1791 Smith was the first auditor ( auditor ) of the Federal Ministry of Finance. In 1801 he became a member of the Senate of Maryland. He died on March 27, 1814 in Baltimore.
