William Story (attorney)

William Story ( born April 4, 1843 Waukesha County, Wisconsin, † June 20, 1921 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1891 and 1893 he was Deputy Governor of the State of Colorado; previously he served as a federal judge.

Career

In 1864, William Story graduated from the University of Michigan, where he studied law. During the final phase of the civil war he served in the years 1864 and 1865 in an infantry unit from Wisconsin. Then he practiced until 1866 in Milwaukee as a lawyer. Then he moved his office to Fayetteville in Arkansas. From 1867 to 1871 he was a judge in the second judicial district of this state. In 1869, he was for some time a judge at the local Supreme Court From 1871 to 1874 was judge Story U.S. District Court for the Western District of Arkansas. From this post he resigned on 17 June 1874 after allegations of corruption against him had become noisy. He then moved to Denver and then to Ouray in Colorado, where he practiced as a successful lawyer. He also worked in the banking industry, mining and rail operations, as well as in road construction.

Politically story member of the Republican Party. In 1890 he was elected to the side of John Long Routt for Lieutenant Governor of Colorado. This post he held 1891-1893. Yet he was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. In 1913 he moved his law office to Salt Lake City in Utah. He later moved to Los Angeles, where he died on 20 June 1921.
