William T. S. Barry

William Taylor Sullivan Barry ( born December 10, 1821 in Columbus, Lowndes County, Mississippi, † January 29, 1868 ) was a politician from the U.S. state of Mississippi. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

Career

William Taylor Sullivan Barry was born on December 10, 1821 in Columbus, Lowndes County, Mississippi. He graduated in 1841 at Yale College, then studied law and was then admitted as a solicitor in 1844. Then he began to practice in Columbus. He also dealt with plantings. Barry decided to pursue a political career. He ran in 1849 for a seat in the House of Representatives from Mississippi, where he remained following his successful election to 1851. He was then elected as a Democrat in the 33rd U.S. Congress. His tenure there was on 4 March 1853 to 3 March 1855. Thereafter, he was re- elected to the House of Representatives from Mississippi, where he held the post of Speaker in 1855. He was also the 1861 President of the State Secession Convention. He also represented his country as a deputy in the Provisional Konföderiertenkongress. When the Civil War by the attack on Fort Sumter in April 1861 broke out, Barry undertook a short time later in the Confederate States Army, where he served in the 35th Infantry Regiment of Mississippi, at times as Brigade Commander. He was captured on April 12, 1865 Mobile. After the war he took in Columbus resume his duties as a lawyer, where he also died on 29 January 1868. He was buried at the " Odd Fellows Cemetery ".
