William Townsend Aiton

William Townsend Aiton ( born February 2, 1766 Kew, London, † October 9, 1849 in Kensington, London ) was an English botanical gardener. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " WTAiton "; but it is also the abbreviation " Ait. f " in use.

Career

He was the eldest son of William Aiton (1731-1793), a botanist. He was his father's successor as head of the Botanical Gardens at Kew.

It was 1789, the second edition of his father's main work out of the " Hortus Kewensis, or, a catalog the plants cultivated in the Royal Botanic Garden at Kew ." He was co-founder of the Royal Horticultural Society in 1804. 1845 he retired.
