William V, Prince of Orange

William V Batavus ( born March 8, 1748 in The Hague, † April 9, 1806 in Braunschweig) was Prince of Orange and Nassau and Stadtholder of the Netherlands.

He was the son of Prince William IV of Orange and Anne of England, the daughter of King George II of Great Britain.

Life

After the death of his father on October 22, 1751, he was - first under the guardianship of his mother, then since 1759 the Duke Ernst Ludwig of Brunswick - governor of the Netherlands.

1763 Friedrich Wilhelm von Thule Meier Prussian ambassador in The Hague and tried, on behalf of Frederick the Great, a marriage between the young governor and Wilhelmina of Prussia. Even after the end of the guardianship with his majority in 1766, leaving William the direction of public affairs the Duke of Brunswick, which he dead the pole, Hendrik Hooft and Jan Bernd Bicker aroused the violent opposition of the Patriot movement under the leadership of Joan Derk van der chapels. Meanwhile, he had come under the influence of his wife, the Prussian Princess Wilhelmina. After these had with Prussian help in 1787 broke the power of the Patriots, the incompetent governor was expelled in 1795 by the French and fled to England. He received in 1801 as compensation the abbeys of Fulda and Corvey, which he relinquished in 1802 to his son. He died on April 9, 1806 in Brunswick and was buried in the cathedral there. On April 28, 1958, his remains were transferred to Delft.

From 1759 to 1795 he was Count of Vianden. 1801 to 1802 he was Prince of Corvey and Fulda ( gave his son from these offices ). He also was Marquis of Veere and Vlissingen, Count of Katzenelenbogen, Count of Diez, Count of Spiegelberg, Count of Buren, Count of Leerdam, Count of Culemborg, Baron of Beilstein, Baron of Gravesend and Baron of land of Cujik.

William V married on October 4, 1767 in Berlin Wilhelmina of Prussia ( 1751-1820 ), daughter of Prince August Wilhelm of Prussia.
