William VI of Angoulême

William VI. Taillefer (franz: Guillaume Taillefer; † August 7, 1179 in Messina ) was a Count of Angoulême Taillefer out of the house. He was a son of Count Vulgrin II and the Pontia of La Marche.

He was married twice. His first wife was Emma, daughter of the Viscount of Limoges Adémar II and former wife of Duke William X of Aquitaine. This he had married after the death of the Duke in 1137 and had her children. His second wife was Margaret, daughter of the Viscount Raymond I of Turenne and widow of the Viscount of Limoges Adémar IV. With her he had several children:

  • Vulgrin III. († 1181 ), Count of Angoulême
  • William Taillefer VII ( † before 1186 ), Count of Angoulême
  • Aymar († 1202), Count of Angoulême
  • Almodis (†? ) 1 ∞ with Amanieu IV of Albret (House of Albret )
  • 2 ∞ with Bernard III. Viscount of Brosse

Wilhelm conspired in 1167 with Count Aldebert IV of La Marche and Geoffrey of Lusignan against Henry II Plantagenet, King of England and husband of the Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine. This revolt, however, was knocked down to 1169 from this. In 1173 Wilhelm supported the revolt of the young Duke Richard the Lionheart against his father, which, however, again was unsuccessful.

In 1176, Wilhelm eventually joined with other leading nobles of Aquitaine as Viscount of Limoges Adémar V. against Duke Richard of the uprising. After his son Vulgrin but experienced a crushing defeat against the Duke in a pitched battle, the rebels are forced to surrender.

Along with some of the rebels under William took in 1178 probably for repentance on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. On the way back home, he died a year later in Messina, Sicily.
