William Waddington

William Henry Waddington ( born December 11, 1826 in Saint- Remy -sur -Avre; † January 13, 1894 in Paris) was a French numismatist, archaeologist and politician.

The son of a British industrialist who settled in France took in 1849 as a student of the University of Cambridge in the traditional rowboat race in the English universities of Oxford and Cambridge in. As a scholar he was in 1868 one of the founders of the École pratique des hautes études. Furthermore, Waddington did as an author of books on archeology ( Voyage en Grèce et en Asie Archaeological miners 1877) and numismatics ( Mélanges de numismatique et de philologie 1861) produced.

He was from February 1871 first as a member of the Chamber of Deputies and then from 1876 until his death in 1894 senator. From 18 May 1873 to 1877 he was Minister of Public Instruction and then. Position he had from 14 December 1877 to 1879 Minister of Foreign Affairs and in this capacity represented at the Congress of Berlin in 1878, also held during his tenure as prime minister. Waddington was born on February 4, 1879 after the resignation of Jules Dufaure Prime Minister of France. Only 10 months later, on December 21, 1879, he resigned; were preceded by questions about the official release and amnesty. He was replaced by Charles de Saulces de Freycinet as Prime Minister. From 1883 to 1893 he represented the French Republic for ten years as ambassador in London. In January 1894 he was defeated in the elections for the Senate.

His extensive and important coin collection was acquired after his death in 1897 for the Cabinet des Médailles the Bibliothèque nationale de France.

He was married to May King Waddington. She has published Letters from a diplomats wife 1893 to 1900, published in London in 1903
