William Wadsworth (officer)

William Wadsworth was before an officer of the New York State Militia and during the British - American War of 1812.

As a brigadier general, he was commander of the New York militia under the command of the U.S. Army at the Battle of Queenston Heights. He chose not to take over the command of the Commander in Chief of the Army Winfield Scott. At the end of the battle Wadsworth came along with about 900 other soldiers in British captivity, after American forces had been cut off at the Canadian side of the Niagara River. They surrendered to avoid a massacre by the Indians employed by the British.
