William Wakefield Baum

William Wakefield Cardinal Baum ( born November 21, 1926 in Dallas, United States) is a former Archbishop Emeritus of Washington and Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

William Wakefield tree received after his training in the minor seminary of Kansas City and in the seminary of St. Louis in 1951, the sacrament of Holy Orders.

In the following five years he worked as a parish pastor in Kansas City and taught theology and church history at the College of St. Theresa. From 1956 to 1958 he earned his doctorate in Rome as a doctor of theology. After his return to the United States of America, he was appointed parish priest in Sugar Creek and the notary on the diocesan court. In addition, he worked as secretary of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission and as vice chancellor of the diocesan administration. He took part as Peritus for questions regarding the unity of Christians in the Second Vatican Council and at several meetings of the World Council of Churches. From 1954 to 1967 he was secretary of the Department of ecumenism at the North American Episcopal chaplain and also in Kansas City. On July 15, 1963 he was awarded by Pope Paul VI. the honorary title Surplus secret chamberlain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ).

1970 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Bishop of Springfield - Cape Girardeau. He received his episcopal consecration on 6 April 1970, the Archbishop of Saint Louis, John Carberry. Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Kansas City -Saint Joseph, Charles Herman helmet Sing, and his Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Vincent Sullivan.

On March 5, 1973 William Wakefield tree was appointed Archbishop of Washington and introduced into the office on 9 May of the same year.

On May 24, 1976 took him by Pope Paul VI. as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Croce in Via Flaminia in the College of Cardinals. 1980 Pope John Paul II named him Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education and released him the leadership of the Archdiocese of Washington. From 1990 to 2001 he was Kardinalgroßpönitentiar the Catholic Church.

When Conclave 2005, he was Joseph Ratzinger, the only voters who had not been appointed by John Paul II to Cardinal, as the also of Paul VI. created Cardinal Jaime Lachica Sin Philippine did not attend for health reasons.
