William Winter Payne

William Winter Payne (* January 2, 1807 in Warrenton, Fauquier County, Virginia, † September 2, 1874 in Warrenton, Virginia ) was an American politician (Democratic Party).

Career

William Winter Payne completed his preparatory studies and studied the law, but never practiced as a lawyer. He retired in 1825 in Franklin County, Alabama, where he focused on agricultural activities. He also decided to pursue a career in politics when he was a deputy in the 1831 House of Representatives from Alabama. He then moved to the Sumter County. As a result, he was 1834-1838 and again in 1840 a ​​member of the House of Representatives from Alabama. During this time he applied unsuccessfully in 1839 for a seat in the Senate of Alabama.

Payne was elected to the 27th U.S. Congress and reelected to the two succeeding U.S. Congresses. He worked there from March 4, 1841 to March 3, 1847. During this time he chaired the Committee on Elections (28th Congress ). On his third re-election attempt in 1846 in the 30th Congress, he suffered a defeat. After the expiration of his term of office he then returned to Virginia in 1847, where he again pursued near Warrenton agricultural activities. Furthermore, he had chaired the 1859 Democratic convention in Alabama.
