William Wirt Culbertson

William Wirt Culbertson (* September 22, 1835 in Lewistown, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, † October 31, 1911 in Oxford, Ohio ) was an American politician. Between 1883 and 1885 he represented the state of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Even in his childhood William Culbertson came with his parents to Kentucky, where he attended the public schools. He was then engaged in the ironworking industry. During the Civil War he served until 1864 as an officer in the army of the Union. Upon leaving the military service he had reached the rank of captain. After the war, Culbertson began a political career as a member of the Republican Party. In 1870 he became a deputy in the House of Representatives from Kentucky. In 1873 he was in the state Senate. Between 1876 and 1884 he participated as a delegate to the Republican National Conventions relevant. From 1882 to 1883 he served as mayor of the city of Ashland.

In the congressional elections of 1882 Culbertson was in the ninth constituency of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of John D. White on March 4, 1883. Until March 3, 1885, he was able to complete a term in Congress. After his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives, William Culbertson moved back from politics and devoted himself to his private affairs. He died on October 31, 1911 in Oxford, and was buried in Ashland.
