Willibald Sauerländer

Willibald Sauerland (* February 29, 1924 in Waldsee, Württemberg ) is a German art historian and art critic.

Life

Sauerland was in Munich in 1953 in the subject doctorate art history. From 1954 to 1959 he worked as Lecteur anglais and tour guide in Paris. From 1959 to 1961 he was a research assistant at the University of Marburg.

After a stay as a visiting member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (1961 /62) habilitation Sauerland and was 1962-1970 Professor at the University of Freiburg / B. In 1964 /65 and 1970 Visiting Professor at New York University and from 1970 until his retirement in 1989 Director of the Central Institute for Art history in Munich. In 1973 he was elected as a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.

Further abroad after his retirement joined in 1984/85 ( Visiting Professor, Harvard University ), 1989 ( Visiting Professor, Berkeley ), 1991 ( Mellon Lecturer, Washington) and 1992 ( Visiting Professor, New York ) on.

Since 1993, Sauerland occasionally writes as a freelancer for the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
