Willunga, South Australia

Willunga is a town of about 2,100 inhabitants in the Australian state of South Australia. Willunga is located 5 km from the McLaren Vale wine region and 47 kilometers south of Adelaide. It is located in the administrative area ( LGA) City of Onkaparinga.

The city's name is derived from the word willangga of the Australian aborigines. However, it is debatable whether this is the place of green trees or black duck is meant.

The first piece of land in this area was purchased in 1839 by Edward Moore. The city itself was a year later measured and reported. About this time also the first slate quarry was put into operation. Because of its high quality slate of Port Willunga was shipped to Australia. Only in the 1890s left the production after Willunga and became a major grain- producing region. Today Willunga is best known for his tonsils. Every year in July the Almond Blossom Festival ( German: Almond Blossom Festival ) instead.

Since 1999, Willunga is the start and finish of the fourth stage of the cycling race Tour Down Under.
