Willy Claes

Willem Werner Hubert " Willy " Claes (* November 24, 1938 in Hasselt ) is a Belgian politician of the Flemish Socialist Party.

Claes was from 1968 a member of the Belgian Parliament, 1973-1992, he was with two interruptions Belgian Minister of Economic Affairs, 1992, he was Foreign Minister and party leader in the Federation of Socialist Parties of the European Community, from November 1994 to March 1995 the Party of European Socialists (PES ). After the death of Manfred Wörner, Claes was NATO Secretary General in 1994. As early as 1995, however, he was forced to resign because of his involvement in the Agusta affair.
