Willy Gordon

Willy Gordon ( born July 2, 1918 in Renge, District Saldus in Latvia, † 2003 in Stockholm) was a Swedish sculptor of the 20th century.

Gordon emigrated at the age of eight years with his family from the Baltic to Malmö in Sweden. He studied sculpture at the Royal Academy of Arts, today Konsthögskolan in Stockholm and later with Ossip Zadkine in Paris. Gordon's striking sculptures are frequently found in public spaces in Sweden, especially in and around Stockholm.

In Stockholm, which it was geographically the center of life, are about a dozen of them. These include the Women (1968 ) in the center of Fruängen, Living ore at Karlavägen, a street in the Östermalm district and the steps with the Torah in front of the synagogue on Blasieholmen, a peninsula in the inner city of Stockholm. In Malmö there is a created by him monument commemorating the victims of the Holocaust.

He also created statues of famous personalities, such as the tenor Jussi Björling, issued in Björling Museum in Borlänge, Evert Taube playing the lute at the Evert Taube terrace in Riddarholmen or the sculpture of the Nobel Prize winner Selma Lagerlöf titled crystal of pain.

The Gordon also created Erinnerungsmal for the Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg is located near his home in Lidingö on the island of Lidingö near Stockholm.

Controversy gained attention Gordon with his sculpture The Gathering. This work is provided on the Östermalmstorget, the central square of the prestigious Stockholm city part of the name. It shows a man with bare limb, carrying a piece of meat on the shoulders, lying there in front of a conceptive position woman. In addition to the controversial discussion of the subject, this group of sculptures was already twice, most recently in December 2006, subject to vandalism and property damage entmannender. There is this work as a scaled-down version in a limited edition in the art trade, a copy is available as a gift from the artist to exhibit the art collection of Bommersvik College in Sweden.

In Gordon's work, the influence of his teacher, Zadkine, but also influences from Eric burrs and Henry Moore are difficult to recognize.
