Wilmot Proviso

The Wilmot Proviso, more rarely, Wilmot was a clause on August 8, 1846 of introduced by Senator David Wilmot amendment. He said that in the vast areas that had fallen to the United States during the Mexican - American War, slavery was not allowed to be introduced. The application was introduced over the next few years several times never adopted. He is regarded as one of the incidents that led up to the Civil War.

The Wilmot Proviso was invalid first by the Compromise of 1850.
