Wilson County (Kansas)

Wilson County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Fredonia.

Geography

The County is located in southeast Kansas, is located in the south about 40 miles from Oklahoma and has an area of 1489 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Woodson County, Allen County, Neosho County, Montgomery County, Elk County and Greenwood County.

History

Wilson County was formed in 1865. It was named after Colonel lived Hiero T. Wilson, the first white men here at Fort Scott in September 1843.

According to the census of 2000, there were 10,332 people in Wilson County in 4203 households and 2849 families in Wilson County. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 96.78 percent White, 0.37 percent African American, 0.88 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.48 percent from other races groups; 1.19 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.67 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 4203 households out of which 29.6 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 57.1 percent were married couples living together, 7.8 percent were single mothers and 32.2 percent were non-families. 29.1 percent of all households were single-person households and 15.8 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.96.

25.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.4 percent 18 to 24 years 23.8 percent between 25 and 44, 23.4 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 19.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 adult women 18 years and older 89.6 males.

The median income for a household was $ 29,747, and the median income for a family was $ 36,990. Males had a median income of $ 27,255, women $ 18,670. The per capita income was $ 14,910. 7.5 percent of families and 11.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
