Wilson Godfrey Harvey

Wilson Godfrey Harvey ( born September 8, 1866 in Charleston, South Carolina, † October 7, 1932 in Tampa, Florida ) was an American politician (Democratic Party) and 1922-1923 Governor of the State of South Carolina.

Political rise

Wilson Harvey attended Charleston High School, but he left early to go into the newspaper business. Later, he was also active in other areas. He helped build the Enterprise Bank of Charleston, whose president he became in 1904. Between 1903 and 1911 he sat on the city council of Charleston, 1910, he was vice (Pro tempore ) mayor of the town. Between 1916 and 1920 he served as Chairman of the wastewater association, ( Sanitary and Drainage Commission) in Charleston County. Since 1921 he was Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina.

Governor of South Carolina

Following the resignation of the incumbent Governor Robert Archer Cooper on May 20, 1922, he had to end until January 16 1923 as new governor whose term of office commenced. During this time he continued the progressive policies of his predecessors. He promoted especially the school system and supported the expansion of the road network, he favored concrete roads. After the end of his tenure, Harvey again devoted his private transactions; among other things, he led some insurance companies. Wilson Harvey died in 1932 in Florida. He was married twice and had three children.
