Wim Eijk

Willem Jacobus Eijk Cardinal, Wim Eijk, ( born June 22, 1953 in Duivendrecht, Netherlands) is a Roman Catholic Archbishop of Utrecht.

Life

Willem Jacobus Eijk 1978 began the study of medicine at the University of Amsterdam. Later he entered the seminary of the diocese of Roermond and began the study of philosophy and Catholic theology. On June 1, 1985 Eijk received the sacrament of Holy Orders in the Cathedral of St. Christoffel in Roermond.

From Willem Jacobus Eijk 1985 to 1987 worked as a pastor in Venlo. In 1987 he was a doctorate in medicine with a thesis on euthanasia. He received his doctorate at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas ( Angelicum ) in Rome in philosophy with a thesis on genetic manipulation 1989. 1990 acquired Eijk licentiate in Catholic theology at the Pontifical Lateran University. From 1990 to 1994 Willem Jacobus Eijk taught moral theology at the seminary of Rolduc and 's- Hertogenbosch. Later he was president of the Institute Mater Ecclesiae Domesticae in Rolduc. From 1996 to 1999 Eijk was a professor of moral theology at the Theological Faculty of Lugano. From 1997 to 2002 he was a member of the International Theological Commission.

On July 17, 1999, Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop of Groningen- Leeuwarden. He received his episcopal consecration Adrianus Johannes Cardinal Simonis on 6 November of the same year in Groningen; Bishop Frans Wiertz and co-consecrators were Bishop Sergio Lasam Utleg. His motto Noli recusare laborem ( " way the work is not back " ) comes from the traditional death prayer of St. Martin.

On 11 December 2007 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. Archbishop of Utrecht and successor of Cardinal Adrianus Johannes Simonis. The inauguration took place on 26 January 2008.

In solemn consistory of February 18, 2012 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Callisto in the College of Cardinals. A year later Eijk participated in the conclave of 2013.
