Wim Schermerhorn

Willem ( Wim ) Schermerhorn ( born December 17, 1894 in Akersloot, Holland, † March 11 1977 in Haarlem ) was a Dutch surveyor and cartographer, technicians and politicians.

Work

Schermerhorn was from June 1945 to July 1946 Prime Minister of the Netherlands and thus led the first Dutch cabinet after the 2nd World War. The Schermerhorn 1946 negotiated with Indonesian nationalists Linggadjati Agreement on independence within a Dutch -Indonesian Union was initially not ratified because Schermer horn deselection ( until 1947 ) and finally rejected by his Catholic successors in office in favor of a " police action ". From 1946 to 1951 sat Schermerhorn for the social democratic PvdA in Parliament.

In the 1950s he founded the ITC ( International Training Center ) for Photogrammetry in the city of Delft, from the soon a large development and research institute was - under cross-fertilization by the local university. Even before the engineer and skillful organizer had the geodetic service of Rijkswaterstaat - the management of dyke systems to Holland coasts - adapted to the increased requirements.

As well as being internationally active civil engineering and photogrammetry he renewed the maps of New Guinea. He worked long as a university professor at Delft University of Technology and was elected in 1940 as President of the ISP (International Society for Photogrammetry ).

In his honor, the biennial international Schermerhorn lectures ( Schermerhorn Lectures ) instead, which bring together many well-known experts in photogrammetry, cartography and GIS computer science.
