Wim Sonneveld

Willem ( Wim ) Sonneveld ( born June 28, 1917 in Utrecht, † March 8, 1974 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch cabaret artist and singer. Together with Toon Hermans and Wim Kan, one counts him among the Big Three of Dutch cabaret.

Sonneveld was initially casual workers, sang in 1932 with an amateur group and entered 1934 with Fons Goossens. Later he had his own group De Rarekiek and also worked in France. After the outbreak of the war he returned to the Netherlands and played in Revue roles. His theater group founded in 1943, Wim Sonneveld existed until 1959.

The versatile entertainer starred in My Fair Lady Higgins Professor (1960-1962), toured solo and also appeared on television. Sonneveld played and sang pieces by well-known authors such as Annie MG Schmidt and Simon Carmiggelt. His Sketch partners belonged Conny Stuart.

1974 Sonneveld suffered a heart attack and died in a hospital in Amsterdam a few days later.

Since 1988, one named for him in Cabaret Award is awarded annually.
