A gable (also gables or Wimberg ) is in the architecture of Gothic gable like a crown on portals and windows.

The word is in English since the 10th century occupied ( OHG wintberga, MHG wintberge ). The output space, " which protects from the wind, holds ". Meant originally gables that extend over the roof. In this context, also " gable " is Wintberge in older sources also in the meaning " battlement ", occasionally as " tooth-like top of the parapet wall of a pinnacle ."

The gable is considered an architectural element that reinforces the pediment the height urge the Gothic. It may be flanked by pinnacles, framed or occupied it. The gable slopes of Wimpergs were often framed or filled with crabs. Its gable is often carried out as a gable flower, for example in the form of a finial. For gables with overhanging forward peak is also called " Lady Slipper " survived. The tympanum may be smooth kept, but it is often filled with vorgeblendetem or openwork tracery.

Outside the immediate architecture we find the gable as a motif in the Gothic carving.

Heraldry

The gable has made it as part of a coat of arms figure in heraldry in some coat of arms. Mostly the architectural object is used to attach a coat of arms in the space under the legs to fill and trim. For the heraldry it is important that it appears in the coat of arms. The building part of the coat of arms is mentioned in the coat of arms description and should be honored accordingly by the coat of arms painter. A good example is the coat of arms of the city Kamenz. Here is decorated according to the coat of arms description a golden gable with crabs on a golden battlements. Often the gable is described with triangular pediment and not always crabs must accompany or be a finial on the top. The number of arms with the gable remains manageable. In the description of the coat of arms of Fehrbellin before 1993 was to read from the quatrefoil in gable
