Wimy

Wimy is a commune with 452 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Aisne in the Picardie region; it belongs to the arrondissement of Vervins, in the canton of Hirson and community association Pays des Trois Rivières.

Geography

The municipality is located in the Wimy thiérache, about five kilometers west of Hirson near the border with Belgium. The southern boundary of the municipality is marked by the upper Oise.

Attractions

Wimy has a typical for the border region of thiérache fortified church. The medieval church of St. Martin was fastened in the years 1578-1585. They thus offered the village population protection from marauding mercenary bands that hit the villages of the French border region at the time of Eighty Years' War. The church is classified as a monument historique.
