Wind River Indian Reservation

The Wind River Indian Reservation is an Indian reservation in the Midwest of the state of Wyoming, which is inhabited jointly by the Eastern Shoshone and the Northern Arapahos.

It is with 8995.733 km ² of land and 9147.864 km ² with water faces ( in the establishment about 12,000 km ²), the seventh largest Indian Reservation in the United States. It takes a little more than a third of Fremont County and more than one fifth of Hot Springs County.

The reserve is located in the Wind River Basin and is surrounded by the Wind River Range, the Owl Creek Mountains and the Absaroka Mountains. In the southwest of the reserve borders on the Bridger - Teton National Forest, to the west by the Fitzpatrick Wilderness. There are over 365 lakes and other water bodies.

The census of 2000 has claimed 23 237 inhabitants, of whom 6,728 ( 28.9 %) than at least partially Native Americans designated by these in turn were 54% and 30 % Shoshone Arapahos. 22 % did not speak English at home.

The largest town is Riverton. The administrative headquarters is in Fort Washakie. On the reserve area, there are several casinos that belong to the tribes. These are the only casinos in Wyoming.

History

The Wind River Indian Reservation was established in 1868 for the Eastern Shoshone. A military camp, Camp Auger, was established on June 28, 1869 at the site of today's Lander. In 1870 it was renamed Camp Brown, in 1871 moved to its present location and finally renamed in honor of Shoshonehäuptling Washakie Washakie Fort 1878. It served until 1909 the military ..

A state school with boarding school and a hospital existed east of Fort Washakie. The Church of St. Michael's in Ethete was built 1917-20. The settlement Arapahoe originally served as a distribution station of the rations to the Arapaho and soon became the trading center.

End of the 19th century, the country was divided among the Indian families and anglicised many names. Agriculture was developed through irrigation. A flour mill was built near Fort Washakie.

1906, parts of the reservation is released by White about the colonization and place Riverton was built on this land.

Historical buildings

Fort Washakie is the historic Fort Washakie Historic District. The area is located within the Wind River Indian Reservation on U.S. Route 287 Fort Washakie Historic District comprises 36 buildings and was accepted as a historical monument with the number 69,000,188 on 16 April 1969 by the National Register of Historic Places.
