Windom is on the plateau of the Coteau des Prairies, which extends over parts of South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota. History

The place Windom in 1871 created by the railway engineer Beach AL at a range of former Sioux City and St. Paul Railroad. Was named the place after William Windom (1827-1891), a U_s Senator and two-time United States Treasury Secretary.
