Windows Management Instrumentation

Windows Management Instrumentation ( WMI) is Microsoft's implementation - and extension - of the Common Information Model ( CIM), a core function of the standardized Web Based Enterprise Management ( WBEM ) for Windows.

Availability

Based on COM and DCOM WMI is an integral part of Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Home Server and Windows Server 2008. For Windows 9x and NT4 add- ons are available. The Windows Firewall does not work with WMI service is not running ( Winmgmt.exe ).
