Windows Messenger service

The news service is a system service that is part of the operating systems of the Windows family. It is used to send in a computer network short messages. It is based on NetBIOS ( nowadays usually by NBT) and is not compatible with the IPv6 protocol.

Function

Since Windows NT, the news service can be invoked via the command line tool cmd.exe. The file in which the message service is implemented, is located in the system32 folder (% windir % \ system32 \ ) and welcomes net.exe. The Messenger service is replaced with Windows Vista by MSG.EXE program.

The program is operated through the command prompt. It receives as its first parameter the SEND command. This is followed by the name of the recipient or recipients of the message loop joins. Immediately following the text of the message to be sent is entered.

Examples of possible entries:

The Messenger service uses UDP ports 135, 137 and 138, and TCP ports 135, 139 and 445

Technically, it is also possible to send messages anonymously. NetSendFaker is for the most well-known program.

Use

Originally, the news service for sending short messages was intended in local networks. For example, could inform larger user groups quickly outages or maintenance work, a system administrator.

Meanwhile, since an e -mail infrastructure is available in most computer networks, the intelligence service has lost rapidly in importance in this field.

The sending of messages is possible not only in local area networks, but also over the Internet. This method has often been used in the past by spammers as a medium for disseminating their own advertising. For this reason, Microsoft has disabled the Messenger service in Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2 and Windows XP. About the Service Control Manager of the service can be activated when needed.

For older systems, instructions on how to disable the service exist.

In the versions of Windows Vista Business and Ultimate, as well as in Windows 2008 and Windows 7, the NET SEND command was replaced by the MSG.EXE program. The versions of Home Basic and Home Premium do not contain native news service.
