REFS ( Resilient File System; German Robust File System) is a file system from Microsoft. It was introduced with the operating systems Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 as a supplement to the NTFS file system.

The main objectives

The main objectives in the development of refs were:

  • High compatibility with the commonly used NTFS waiving the little-used functions,
  • Review of data and optionally automatic correction ( ECC)
  • Scalability,
  • The file system is to remain online even during maintenance,
  • As designed for file servers, there is no support to boot from it or for use on removable media.
