Windows SteadyState

Windows " steady state " was a free English-language security tool from Microsoft, which was formerly known under the name " Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit ". The program is no longer offered by Microsoft since December 31, 2010, but some providers offer the program still download. The support ended July 1, 2011.

Steady state was intended for use on computers with Windows XP operating system that are located in public places and many people are available, such as libraries or Internet cafes. In the current version 2.5 it was possible to use SteadyState on Windows Vista.

However, the program could also be used in private use, so that eg could prevent other users from changing certain settings or delete files from the hard disk by the appropriate profile has been locked. The user in question was then apparently normal make changes to his account, but these were deleted at logoff again.

It was also possible to prevent the execution of unknown software or prohibit access to certain programs. Any changes that were made during a session, that is, if, for example, tried a program or an important file by mistake, such as a photograph, was deleted, it was with option "Protect the Hard Disk" in the main dialog SteadyState be undone. This was also the case that a computer virus was accidentally installed. This was possible because the program could save the system partition in a cache file ( Cache.wdp ), which included at least 2 GB to 40 GB.

Should not only the XP system itself, but also other files and applications are protected, have had to find this on the system partition (usually drive C :). When working on the computer SteadyState wrote using a virtualization driver all changes and data in the created cache file. Once the computer has restarted, these files have been deleted, and so that all changes to the system.
