Winn-Dixie

Winn -Dixie Stores, Inc. is an American retailer headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. On the basis of the turnover from the year 2011, Winn -Dixie the 53rd largest retailer in the United States. The company currently operates 482 stores in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia and Mississippi. It was founded in 1955 under its current name. The roots go but back to the year 1925.

History

Foundation

In 1925, William Davis $ 10,000 borrowed from his father and moved to Miami, where he bought a grocery store, which bore the name of rock Moor Grocery. 1927, the business was renamed in Table Supply. In addition, four more branches were opened. 1931, the chain 33 stores in Florida. William Davis died in 1934 and his four sons took over the company. In 1939, the brothers bought 51 percent of Winn- Lovett, a chain with 73 stores. In 1944, the Brothers Winn- Lovett took as the new name of the company and moved their headquarters to Jacksonville.

Renamed Winn- Dixie

Winn- Lovett was 1952, the first Corporation, headquartered in Florida, which was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The company continued to grow strongly and took over many supermarkets in South Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. Winn- Lovett bought the Dixie Home chain and changed its name to Winn -Dixie.

Financial difficulties

In 2003, Winn -Dixie had over 1000 stores. Nevertheless, the share was the one with the lowest performance in the S & P 500 In April 2004, the company closed 156 stores. Among the 156 stores included the entire 111 stores in the Midwestern United States. Also some shops in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia were closed. Cause of the financial difficulties was the tough competition with rivals Publix and Wal -Mart.

Insolvency

On February 22, 2005 Winn -Dixie filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11. On June 21, Winn -Dixie announced that 326 stores will be sold or closed, which means a loss of 22,000 jobs. The company closed all stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

On 28 February 2006 35 stores in Florida were closed.

Takeover

On 21 November 2006, the management announced that it is now back in a good financial position and the restructuring is completed.

12 March 2012 took over BI -LO, an American supermarket chain Winn -Dixie for 560 million U.S. dollars. Winn -Dixie is now a subsidiary of BI -LO Holding.
