Background

The album was preceded by an exchange of the label from Philadelphia International to major label MCA Records. Following the publication of the work of the Janet Jackson album Control sparked at the top of the U.S. album charts and became in turn replaced by the soundtrack to the movie Top Gun, it also received a platinum award. The success of the album was promoted by the song On My Own, a duet with Michael McDonald. The song led to both the pop and R & B charts.

Reception

Wrote Rob Wynn of Allmusic, the album was out for LaBelle to stardom, after she had sought since 1977. With Kiss Away the Pain even more potential, but ignored hit single was included. He missed three out of five stars.
