Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba

Winnipeg Beach is a small town which is located in the Interlake region in the Canadian province of Manitoba. The city was founded in 1900 by Sir William Whyte and is located near the Highway 9 and Highway 229 southwest of Lake Winnipeg and about 56 km north from the city of Winnipeg. The town is bordered by the Rural Municipality of Gimli, the Rural Municipality of St. Andrews, and Lake Winnipeg. In 2006, the population of 1017. The nearest towns are Dunnottar, Gimli, Teulon, Clandeboye, Selkirk and Sandy Hook.

History

In 1900 the Canadian Pacific Railway ( CPR) purchased 13 acres of undeveloped land 56 kilometers north of Winnipeg. A short time later they began construction of the small town. To let people settle several campaigns have been launched, among other things, the 3 km long sandy beach, several recreational parks and other venues has established. There were other hotels, a pier and park. In 1913 the Winnipeg Beach was so popular that the CPR had to use 13 trains that shuttled between Winnipeg Beach and the city Winnipeg. During 1950, the attractiveness of the town faded. The beach, however, remained a popular destination. The theme park was closed in 1964.

Presence

After the amusement park was closed, the province of Manitoba has invested in the city and built it into a recreation area. In addition to several restaurants, hotels and a skateboarding park were installed. Furthermore, parking facilities have been improved to provide sufficient capacity in the summer months to have.
