Winona is the capital city of Winona County in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It has 27 592 inhabitants (as of 2010) and an area of 61.0 km ².

History

The town was founded in 1851 by Orrin Smith, the first name was Montezuma. In 1953, the settlement was renamed in Winona - after the word We- No -Nah the Dakota Indians, with which the first -born daughter was named.

In 1855 there were already 815 inhabitants and 2,464 in 1860. In the 1880s, Winona was the third largest city in Minnesota. The rapid development owes Winona rail. 1891 a railway bridge over the Mississippi River was built, which was established in 1985 closed and demolished in 1990.

In the 1860s, the inland port was built in 1870 was the fourth largest inland port in the United States.

Education and Culture
