Winston County (Alabama)

The Winston County is a county located in the state of Alabama in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Double Springs. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in the central northwestern Alabama and has an area of 1637 square kilometers, of which 45 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lawrence County, Cullman County, Walker County, Marion County and Franklin County.

History

Winston County was born on February 12, 1850 from parts of Walker County first as Hancock County, named after the governor of Massachusetts, John Hancock formed. On January 22, 1858 it was renamed in Winston County, named after the governor of Alabama, John A. Winston. During the Civil War, Winston County refused integration into the Confederacy and declared himself the "Republic of Winston " (now known as " the Free State of Winston ").
