Winter Haven is a city in Polk County in the U.S. state of Florida with 33,874 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

In the immediate vicinity are the cities of Auburndale, Lake Alfred, Haines City, Dundee and Lake Hamilton. Bartow is located 10 km southwest of Orlando and 70 km northeast of the city.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 33,874 inhabitants distributed to 17,037 households. The population density was 739.6 inh. / Km ². 64.7 % of the population were white, 27.7 % African American, 0.3% Native American and 2.0% of Asian Americans. 3.1% were members of other ethnic groups and 2.3% in different ethnic groups. 11.0 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 37.4 % of all households lived in 28.1 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 61.6 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.32 persons and the average family size is 2.93.

24.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.1% were 20-39 years old, 23.7% were 40-59 years old and 28.7 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 42 years. 46.3 % of the population were male and 53.7 % female.

The average annual income was $ 36,895, while 22.3 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 90.99 % of the population spoke Spanish 4.48% and 4.53% had a different mother tongue.

In autumn 2011, Legoland Florida opened in Winter Haven.

Traffic

Winter Haven is traversed or affected by U.S. Highways 17, 27 and 92 and the Florida State Roads 540, 542, 544, 600 and 620. Winter Haven Train Station is a station of the trains Silver Star and Silver Meteor train Amtrak society on the route from Miami to New York City. The nearest airports are the Lakeland Linder Regional Airport ( 30 km west ) and the Orlando International Airport (70 km northeast).

Crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 459 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) in the high range. There were two murders, ten rapes, 68 robberies, 164 injuries, 368 burglaries, 1,462 thefts, 85 car thefts and six arsons.
