Winter Park is a city in Orange County in the U.S. state of Florida with 27,852 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

Winter Park is adjacent to the cities of Maitland and Orlando.

History

Winter Park was founded in the late 19th century as a resort of industrialists from New England. It was the first planned city in Florida. No public buildings or supermarkets were placed on the main roads, but only museums and art galleries. The site was designed so that the residents have plenty of opportunities for recreation and leisure activities.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 27,852 inhabitants distributed to 13,626 households. The population density was 1465.9 inh. / Km ². 86.9 % of the population were white, 7.6 % African American, 0.2% Native American and 2.3% Asian Americans. 1.2% were members of other ethnic groups and 1.8% in different ethnic groups. 7.0% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 32.8 % of all households lived in 23.3 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 54.5 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.15 persons and the average family size is 2.85 people.

21.8 % of the population were younger than 20 years, 22.7 % were 20-39 years old, 29.1% were 40-59 years old and 26.4 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 44 years. 46.8 % of the population were male and 53.2 % female.

The average annual income was $ 57,432, while 12.5 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 93.82 % of the population spoke Spanish 4.56% and 1.62 % had a different mother tongue.

Facilities

In the city there are the Rollins College, Full Sail University and the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, where the largest collection in the world is to visit of glasses of the artist Louis Comfort Tiffany.

In Winter Park there are more parks and green areas than in other Florida cities.

Economy

The non-profit organization Adventist Health System and the publisher Bonnier Corporation located in the city. The largest employer in the city is the Winter Park Memorial Hospital, which was founded by the Free Church of Seventh- day Adventists and operated. Other major employers are the Rollins College and the administration of the Orange County Public Schools. The trade company Publix is also represented in Winter Park.

Traffic

Winter Park is 423, 426 and 436 crosses or touches of Interstate 4, of the U.S. Highways 17 and 92 (SR 600) and by the Florida State Roads.

The Winter Park railway station is a station of the trains Silver Star and Silver Meteor train Amtrak on the route from Miami to New York City. As of 2014, the station is also operated by the SunRail on the route from DeBary to Orlando ( Sand Lake Road station ), whereby the compression area Greater Orlando is better developed in rail transport. 2016, the range in the north to DeLand and south is extended by Poinciana.

The nearest airports are Orlando Executive Airport (national, 2 km to the south ) and the Orlando International Airport (15 km south).

Crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 214 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) within the average range. There were two rapes, 26 robberies, 41 injuries, 272 burglaries, 565 thefts, 42 car thefts and four arson.
