History

The station was opened on 24 June 1878. Winterswijk was once an important hub with routes in five directions. It was important to the freight and passenger traffic to and from Germany. In addition to the still existing railway lines to Zevenaar and Zutphen, there used to also flies to Bocholt, Borken and Neede and then on to Hengelo, Enschede and Hellendoorn.

Following the closure and the decline of freight transport, the importance of the station fell sharply. The large station building still recalls the old days. However, the station has only one track next to the station building. On the grounds of the former freight tracks a school to be built in 2012.
