Winterthur is an unincorporated community ( " Unincorporated Area ") in New Castle County in the U.S. state of Delaware.

Name

The area is named after the museum, which in turn takes its name from Winterthur, the sixth largest city in Switzerland.

Jacques- Antoine Biderman (* 1790) emigrated to this area as the first Swiss. He was the son of Jacques Bidermann (1751-1871), whose uncle Melchior Steiner (1762-1837) from Winterthur to Geneva moved to there build a business. The father had himself well during his time in Paris close business to Winterthur and increased during the French Revolution to the " Directeur des Subsistances générales de la République pour le service du ministre de la guerre " before this position in the first crisis of the new Republic lost again.

Geography

The place is located at Brandywine Creek State Park Brandywine Creek on which rises in Pennsylvania. Winterthur is located north of Wilmington near the border with Pennsylvania at the intersection of the two Delaware Routes 92 and 100

Traffic

Winterthur is served by bus line 10, the Delaware Transit Corporation ( DART). The community is located about 15 minutes by car from the Wilmington train station and 40 minutes from Philadelphia International Airport.

Culture and Leisure

Winterthur has an art museum on the large country estate of the DuPont family with more than 85,000 sculptures and a connected thereto Park, Winterthur Museum and Country Estate. The museum contains one of the most important collections of Americana in the United States.

In addition, the golf courses Wilmington Country Club and Bidermann Golf Course are close to the community.
