Winthrop is a town in Okanogan County in the U.S. state of Washington. In 2000 the town had 349 residents, the official estimate for the year 2006 amounted to 371 residents.

Owen Wister, who was roommate of the town's founder, Guy Waring at Harvard, spent his honeymoon, and then wrote The Virginian.

History

The first inhabitants in the area were Indians who ( is named after the Methow ) on the banks of the Methow River, the Twisp River and Chewuch Rivers lived. This digging for Camassiawurzeln, gathered berries, fished and hunted. The first white men in the valley were in the 19th century trappers hunting for furs.

In the spring of 1868 Slate Creek was discovered by gold panning gold on, but not until 1883 did the gold rush, the first permanent settlers in the area. One of them was Guy Waring, in 1891 at the confluence of Chewuch and Methow River built a house. ( Today, this houses a museum. ) The city is named after Theodore Winthrop, an adventurer, traveler and writer.

After a devastating fire in 1893, the city was rebuilt. Waring's original Duck Brand Saloon had survived the fire unscathed and is now Winthrop's Town Hall.

1894 destroyed a flood, the bridge on the north branch of the river, which was built by Colonel Tom hard again 1895. The place was then living mainly from a well-equipped sawmill, its pastures, livestock and the supply of lying in the area mines with goods. Around the year 1915, the most tunnels were closed.

Winthrop was registered on 12 March 1924 as a Town.

As 1972, the North Cascades Highway was almost completed, some businessmen decided in the town to focus their activities on tourism. At that time it was decided to restore the city as a Western city.

Winthrop is known that all the buildings are built in the style of the Wild West. This makes the village a popular tourist destination. Winthrop is surrounded in winter by more than 170 km of cross country ski trails. The North Cascades National Park is located west of the city limits. A Smoke Jumper base is located in the vicinity; it is between Winthrop and Twisp.
