Winton Motor Carriage Company

Winton Motor Carriage Company was an automobile and engine manufacturers in Cleveland, Ohio. The company was founded on March 15, 1897 by Scottish immigrant Alexander Winton and had patented a number of inventions relating to the auto mechanics.

Winton had his first two fully functional prototype car, very well tested for durability and usefulness by trying this on a 1300 km journey from Cleveland to New York City and had been tested.

1898 Alexander Winton built the first vans with gasoline engines in the U.S..

In the following years, Winton was one of the largest car manufacturers in the United States. 1924 ends the Winton Motor Carriage Company automobile production because of competition from other manufacturers had become too great. The production of gasoline and diesel engines for stationary applications, marine and railroad was continued under the already 1912 registered name Winton Engine Company.

On 20 June 1930, the Winton Engine Company became a subsidiary of General Motors. The former Winton Machine Division of General Motors was closed in 1962.
