Winton, New Zealand

Winton is a town in New Zealand. It is located in the district of Southland, the southern end of New Zealand's South Island and is located approximately 30 kilometers from the Pacific coast. The nearest major cities are in the east of Gore, 50 km north of Lumsden and 30 km in south Invercargill. This city, which is located near the banks of the Oreti River, was named after Thomas Winton, a cattle keeper, who lived in the time around 1850 in the region. At the 2001 census it had 2,100 inhabitants. Minnie Dean, the only woman who ever got the death penalty in New Zealand, is buried in the cemetery Winton.

Winton was once a railway station, but is no longer connected to a railway line. On February 22, 1871 was a railway from Invercargill to Winton was opened and expanded over time and changed. This was the southernmost line in Southland, the 1.435 mm was obtained in normal track, the next track section after Caroline was born in the New Zealand usual narrow gauge 30 inches ( 1,067 mm). The Kingston route, once one of the more important sections of the country, fell into disrepair in the 1970s and most of this route closed on December 13, 1982, including the part by Winton. Today little remains of the track, although its course can still be seen.

Road

Through the city leads the State Highway 6, which leads north to Queenstown and Invercargill and northward to Lumsden.

Winton is a popular resting place for people who drive towards the coast in the south. Although the city has only one main road, but as Highway 6 south leads.
