Geography

Geographical Location

Wipfeld is nestled in the beginning of a side to the right of the Main River at river kilometer 317.2 at the southeast end of the district of Schweinfurt. The highest point is 315 meters, the mountain Speier. The district of the village is 521 hectares, of which 85 hectares planted with vines.

Nearby are the towns of Würzburg ( 27 km), Schweinfurt (15 km ); by Werneck there are 11, 10 and according to Volkach Gerolzhofen 15 km.

The district of St. Louis lies on the left bank of the Main, and can be reached by ferry Main. There are five sulfur mineral springs, which were discovered in 1800. They formed the basis for the cure of the Ludwig bath 1811-1901. Thereafter, the Benedictine monastery was expanded and established a school. Today there is the Antonia - Werr center, a curative youth welfare institution for girls and young women under the auspices of the Congregation of the Servants of the Holy Childhood of Jesus from the Third Order of St. Francis in the upper cell. Main downside is the village of Castle Klingenberg.

History

Wipfeld was first documented on 21 April 918, when the bishop of Freising Dracholf gave the location of the monastery Schwarzach. The name origin is unknown; as determinative of the personal name Wipo or Wippo is assumed. Since the end of the 14th century a penny Court had its headquarters in the town. In 1737 the municipality was awarded market rights. The discovery of five mineral springs on the left side of the Main late 18th century led to the construction of the Ludwig bath which was expanded after the sale to the Benedictine monastery of St. Louis from 1901. With Conrad Celtis and Eulogius Schneider came two prominent personalities of this small wine. From 1987 to 1995 was Wipfeld model community of urban design as well as model village renewal projects for research urban renewal of villages and hamlets of the experimental housing and urban development at the Federal Ministry for Regional Planning, Building and Urban Development. Viniculture

The Wipfelder viticulture is already proven in documents in 1244. The location name Wipfelder Zehntgraf was introduced in 1971 in the course of land consolidation. The term Zehntgraf results from the historically erroneous connection of the industrial name Zehntlein with the center court. On about 85 acres more than one hundred cooperative winery and self- marketers rely primarily on the white varieties Silvaner, Müller -Thurgau, Bacchus, Traminer, Pinot Gris and Kerner. Red varieties such as Domination, Pinot Noir, Regent and dornfelder complete the offer. The 3.3 km long tithe Count wine route information since 1997 on everything you need to know about wine. Is one of the oldest vineyards of Germany, which is planted even with the mixed set of the Kirchberg walkways.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms from 1978 is in red with a silver wave pole with the silver capital letters CI in the mirror image. It is ever a sechsstrahliger silver star. It was designed in reference to the poet Conrad Celtis coat of arms '.

Parish council

The council has 12 members in addition to the mayor, 9 of which belong to the CSU and 3 are non-party. (As at municipal election on March 2, 2008)

Twinning

With the community Follina in Italy is a town twinning. The place is located in the Prosecco area between Valdobbiadene and Vittorio Veneto about halfway. Follina has a well-preserved medieval center and a Cistercian monastery from the 14th century.

Museums

  • The House of Literature Wipfeld in the former Bader house contains an exhibition about the literary work of the sons of the community.

Structures

  • Above the village is the Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist, whose nave was built in the years 1786/87. The choir was built as early as 1615. The tower dates from 1599 and is a Julius- Real - tower. The classical interior of the church comes from Materno Bossi.
  • The monastery church of the Holy Family in St. Louis was built in the years 1906-09 and is furnished in Beuronese style.
  • The former Würzburg office building with stepped gables on the market square was built in 1580-83 under Julius True.
  • The town hall with half-timbered, balconies and hipped roof was built in 1727.

Clubs

  • The Wipfeld FC was founded in 1921. The association operation includes the sports of football, netball and athletics.
  • The Musikverein Wipfeld eV was founded in 1967 and dedicated to the care of the local brass band.
  • The Weinbauverein Wipfeld association represents the interests of the local wineries and promotes wine tourism.
  • The glee club Liederkranz Wipfeld eV devoted herself to singing.

Nature reserve

On the linksmainischen district area the nature reserve Wipfelder Mainaue extends to 72 acres meadow area near St. Louis.

Regular events

Traditional wine festivals are the vineyard hike on Ascension Day, the Promenade Wine Festival June and the road Wine Festival at Assumption. The parish youth traditionally held an annual bonfire.

Traffic

  • Through the district Wipfeld river Main flows. At river kilometer 317 is the smallest inland port in Bavaria.
  • The main ferry connects Wipfeld with the hamlet of St. Louis.
  • The Main Bike Trail runs through the community.
  • In the district lies the dam with hydroelectric plant and a ship lock. The power plant with two Kaplan turbines went into operation in 1951.
