Geography

Wippra is located on the southeastern edge of the Harz, about 13 kilometers north of Sanger Hausen, at about 320 m altitude. The village lies in the valley of the current flowing through Wippra Wipper and is surrounded by dense forests. The forest was long but not always grown as dense as today, as the Mansfeld copper mining require large quantities of wood both for tunnel construction, as well as for the melting process.

About seven miles outside of the village, deep in the Wippertal, is the dam Wippra. It was built from 1951 to 1952 and holds up to 2 million cubic meters of water. The dam is 20 m high and 126 m wide.

At Wippra borders the place Friesendorf.

History

In a resulting 881-899 directory, the tithes of the monastery Hersfeld, Wippra first mentioned as requiring a tenth place in the frieze Vuipparacha field in a document. The town was founded as a market town, which even today the oldest street Wippras, the spot road reports. On the Schlossberg are still remains of the castle Wippra from the 11th century.
