We Prodigies (1958 ) is a German film directed by Kurt Hoffmann. It is based on the 1957 novel of the same title published satirical by Hugo Hartung and was produced by the film structure GmbH Göttingen.
Action
The viewer follows the life of the young Hans Boeckel over 40 years ( 1913-1957 ): from the - alleged - encounter of his classmates Bruno Tiches with Kaiser Wilhelm II to the West German economic miracle. Boeckel is a journalist, loses his position but under the Nazis, whom he considers to be a temporary phenomenon. His first girlfriend Vera emigrated with her father, as his Jewish school friend. He marries the Danish Kirsten, who helps him with her family about the hard time until he successfully works for a newspaper back in the 1950s. Contrasted is his story with that of his sinister school friend Bruno Tiches, which brings it with opportunism by the Nazi functionary about the bootleggers to the Director-General.
Assessment
We prodigies (besides roses for the prosecutor, Wolfgang Staudte, and The Bridge, Bernhard Wicki, both 1959), one of the few German films of the 1950s that deal critically with the Third Reich. The film is based on a certain powerlessness of the decent, had the rise of immoral and stupid Nazis nothing to oppose. That even has to serve in the postwar period " force majeure " to have the villain Bruno Tiches in the barriers is to understand both as a critique of contemporary society, as well as resignation before the inevitably stronger opportunists.
Noteworthy is the cabaret background story of the narrator Wolfgang Neuss Wolfgang Müller: Using old cinema techniques they present on stage in front of the film within a film - screen sitting, chapter by chapter, the individual scenes from Boeckels history: Neuss explains the images, Müller accompanied musically on the piano. We prodigies 1960 was awarded the Golden Globe Award in the category Best Foreign Language Film. Back in 1959, the film with the German Film Award in Silver and a cash prize of 80,000, was - DM excellent. Robert Graf received for his performance also the German Film Award in Silver ( Best Newcomer ). Gold Medal of the First Moscow International Film Festival 1959.
