Wireless Markup Language

The Wireless Markup Language (WML) is an XML - based page description language, which is a much reduced version of HTML. WML is designed to display variable content to mobile phones; It is part of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). Unlike HTML, WML code is first converted into a special binary code before sending, which is then sent to the mobile phone. On older phones with little memory the size of a WML file is limited to 1600 bytes; now this limit hardly plays a role but in practice.

WML is, despite its XML - basing and based on HTML not a subset of XHTML. Therefore, the W3C is trying to spread XHTML Basic and XHTML Mobile Profile as a true subset of XHTML and WML thus to replace the long term.

WML is based on the card stack metaphor. In this case, a transmitted applies site ( entire website) as the cover and the pages as cards. Also the WML - day is called ... . There is always sent an entire deck on the WAP gateway to the end user from the server.
