Wise ( since 1924; previously Big Glades, Gladesville or Gladeville ) is a place in the Wise County in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is the main town and the administrative center (known as the county seat ) of Wise County.

Three buildings of the place - all located on Main Street - on the National Register of Historic Places: the courthouse Wise County Courthouse in 1981, the Colonial Hotel in 1991 and the European Championships Fulton House ( 05,001,581 ) 2006.

In Wise, the University of Virginia 's College at Wise is home to the only branch college of the University of Virginia. In addition, the town has four schools, three public schools ( Wise Primary School, LF Addington Middle School and JJ Kelly High School ) and a private Christian school ( Wise County Christian School ).

Wise is a partner city in the Turkish town of Çeşme (west of İzmir ).

History

In the border region, in southwest Virginia, the place had Big Glades (English for: large clearings ) developed, probably named after the clearings nearby. 1850 a post office was opened. The oldest evidence of a school in the village are from 1855, when a single-room log cabin (log cabin ) was used as a school.

1856 a new County in southwest Virginia was created and named after the reigning recently Gouverneut of Virginia, Henry A. Wise, " Wise County ." The main town and administrative center (known as County Seat) was changing the name of "Big Glades " on " Gladesville " to " Gladeville "; under the latter name it was finally officially in 1874 to a (small) town where ( Incorporated ). Only in 1924 the place would be renamed "the Wise ".

In the American Civil War it was in place in damage, 1864 a small courthouse of the Wise County was destroyed by Union troops among others. The significantly larger new building of the building was built in 1896 and now houses not only the court but also serves as the main administration building of the county.

After 1880, the coal industry held in Wise County feeder. As developed coal mining in the north west of the city, the place to trade center was ( Beaty 's Store was founded in 1870 ); should reach its peak by the coal "boom " in the seventies of the 20th century, Wise.

1882 Gladeville College was built, the students tuition for all classes offered, from elementary school to college level. 1906, the "College " was transformed to Wise High School, the first high school in Wise County. In the context of school - building activities in Wise County in the fifties the JJ Kelly High School was built in the village Wise. In the sixties, racial segregation in schools was abandoned. 1968 involved the Wise Primary School its present building (built in 2000). As early as 1954 in Wise, with the support of the University of Virginia, the state Clinch Valley College was opened; the small college was the only branch college of the University of Virginia. It is the only public four-year college of Virginia west of Radford. In 1999, the university in University of Virginia 's College at Wise has been renamed.

Population

The population is 95.24 % white according to the standards of the United States Census Bureau ( as of 2000). 26.3% of the 1,424 households of Wise had in the year children and 18 years, and 47 % were married couples. The households were 2.17 persons on average and earned $ 28,531 U.S. dollars. 19.7 % of the population were 18 years old, 11.3 % from 18 to 24, 30.7 % from 25 to 44, 23.4% 56-64 and 15 % 65 years or older.

Probably the most well-known personality who has brought Wise, is the actor George C. Scott, who was born in Wise and raised. Also here was born Raymond Allen Davis, a CIA operative who was convicted in Pakistan for double murder.
